The 10 Spookiest Songs

LxL_TopTenThursdays_02_900x300Halloween Concert, halloween songs

With All Hallows Eve on the horizon, we thought it fitting to list out our favorite tracks that best celebrate the holiday. Many, many songs were optioned for this list and the race was so tight we decided to eliminate all soundtracks or scores. It is a separate list for a different day because there are just too many good ones. Additionally almost every Odd Future or Tyler, the Creator track was discussed to the point we decided to just list him here as his own entity. Everything that man touches sounds like a nightmare, but one in which I frequently enjoy. So without further ado, I give you are favorite tracks for any Halloween or Werewolf Bar Mitzvah alike:

Editor’s Note: This list was originally published in 2012, but is really good for any Halloween.

Earl Sweatshirt Review: Doris

Earl Sweatshirt

Doris

doris

For some reason I believe a lot of people were expecting a masterpiece from Earl Sweatshirt.  A lot of hype has surrounded Earl’s return to the United States and getting back on the grid.  The hype wasn’t without merit, highlighted by his turn on Frank Ocean’s superb “Super Rich Kids”.  But I think everyone kind of forgets that a.) he is only 19 years of age, b.) his mixtape Earl was almost entirely produced by production wizard Tyler, the Creator, and c.) most of his other credits were at the hand of very experienced producers and more accomplished artists.  So no, Doris is not a masterpiece.  But give Earl Sweatshirt a couple more albums and I think he may have that potential.

Top Ten Thursday: Arrested Development Characters…In Song!

arrested-development

We at LxL are all huge Arrested Development fans.  And while the highly-anticipated fourth season resurrection may have come in under expectations, we thought we would still honor the effort with a list.  Before anyone makes a nasty remark in the comments section, yes, Billboard (who did a fantastic job) did a list along the same theme as this, but we eschewed all their song choices except for one.  As for the content of the list, we just attempted to pair each character with a song suiting their character.  A little different than our other lists, we decided it would be pointless to put them in any particular order.  This list more than any other, we would love to hear your suggestions for additional pairings.  Thanks and enjoy.

Michael:  Sly & the Family Stone – “A Family Affair”

michael bluth

Michael’s goal has always been to “keep the family together”, but if the fourth season of AD is any indication, Michael may just turn out crazier than Sly Stone himself.

Tyler, The Creator Review: Wolf

Tyler, The Creator

Wolf

tyler the creator, wolf, album, cover, art

Wolf is a weird album.  Not that Tyler, The Creator hasn’t always been weird or eccentric or effing crazy, but this time he really outdid himself.  “How?”, you ask?  By making a mature and cohesive, but also very well-balanced hip-hop album.  Sure, there are a few oddball tracks to be found on Wolf.  “Tamale” is a bit out of place as a world beat influenced departure, but its actually good and shows Tyler pushing himself into new territory.  While the rest of the album is nothing like “Tamale”, it is a microcosm of what Tyler is trying to do as a whole.  He focuses on production techniques that allow the vocalists to shine, rather than force the vocalists to overcome flawed production to save a song or try to force a hit.  Almost everything seems so easy, that it takes a few listens to appreciated what Tyler has done.
