One of our biggest pet peeves at LxL is the mid-career self-titled reinvention album: the one last gasp at pretending to start over. Many times it is when a band joins a major label and hopes to start anew or when the band has been falling apart and hopes for a fresh start, but either way, the mid-career self-titled album usually spells trouble. MGMT this week joins the ranks of mid-career self-titled albums, and from early returns, it sounds like this album won’t necessarily be a return to form. So in order to get our minds off the ugly self-titled trend, we have decided to give you the 10 best self-titled (or eponymous) albums of all time.

Top Ten Thursday: Bands Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad Transformation for Bands

While we may not be a TV blog, we still love and adore Breaking Bad, the suspenseful AMC drama that returns this Sunday for the final half of its last season. For those who haven’t seen the show, the concept is essentially to take a squeaky clean good guy and moment by moment, slowly turn him into a criminal maniac: taking Mr. Chips and turning him into Scarface. So we thought which musicians have followed a similar transformation from good to bad, but when we mean bad, we don’t mean evil: we mean just plain crappy. LxListening: As Lo As Fi Can Go

If you haven’t deduced by the title, I have been listening to a lot of shi**y sounding garage rock lately. Which incidentally, sounds far from shi**y, but rather incredibly pleasant to my ears. It began when the Screaming Females performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. I keep going back to them, and it spun me right back into my frequent obsession with dirty, overly distorted, garage-rock-grunge-punk.
