The 10 Best Prince Songs or: The List Formerly Known as Our Favorite Songs by the Artist Prince

prince-rip

Editor’s note: With the shocking and sudden death of Prince, the best way we know how to mourn is share his songs that we loved the most. With that, here is our list from 2014 of our favorite Prince songs of all time. Let all the doves cry out.

——————————————————————————–

I am sure that if you told Prince that you could order ten of his best all-time songs onto a list of ten, he would make the exact face above and sink it deep into your soul. It is hard to put together a list of such a beloved artist’s songs, especially after releasing thirty-three albums. His thirty-third and thirty-second of which were recently simultaneously released on September 30th. For the occasion (although late), we decided to take on the daunting task of trying to list our favorites anyways. The result is quite a crowd-pleasing list I would say. If you are looking for some serious deep tracks you should probably look elsewhere, but if you can argue the legitimacy of these legendary wonders of pop music, we would love to hear those arguments below. Now onto the list:

Top Ten Thursday: The 10 Best Rainy Day Songs

RainyBeatles

It is still Thursday, so this is still a Top Ten Thursday.  It is also spring, and thus the time for rain.  And tornadoes.  And hail.  But mostly a lot of rain.  So why not craft a soundtrack for the perfect rainy day listening experience.  As a warning, we were more literal with this particular list, instead of mood oriented, so its a bit of a hodge podge of styles.

Noticeably missing, unfortunately, is the classic Live track “Lightning Crashes”, and for that we sincerely apologize.  It’s just that nothing kills our writing mood more than any mention of placenta.  Enjoy the list.

10.  “Rain On a Highway” – Daughn Gibson

daughn gibson, gun,

You can just feel Daughn Gibson’s past as a truck driver seeping through on this song.  Headlights on. Windshield wipers beating back and forth.  Rain on the the highway.  Done deal.

Top Ten Movie Soundtracks

titanic, soundtrack, album, cover, art

We wanted to give one last shout out to The Man With the Iron Fists soundtrack before we shut up about it (at least until the end of the year lists), so thought we could dig into other movie soundtracks and come up with a list of our favorites.  I’m sure to some of our reader’s dismay, we decided to implement a couple rules.

Rule #1:  No musicals.  Yes, there are a lot of great musicals put on film that maintain great soundtracks.  It is a little difficult to distinguish composed musicals from pop music though.  Don’t worry, musicals will get their own list one day, and Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and The Sound of Music will be honored.  We just all need to see Book of Mormon first.

Rule #2:  No film scores.  Sorry John Williams and James Horner, but today is not your day.  Once again, we wanted to parse this list down to something a bit more manageable (and believe me, it still wasn’t manageable).  Film scores will also have their day.

Without further ado, hit the jump, and feel free to comment on what we missed, mistakenly included, or anything else that comes to mind.
