Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors
For many years, Big Boi was the slightly lesser half of one of my favorite hip hop acts, Outkast. It’s not that he wasn’t a crucial part of every Outkast album; he just seemed to be a little more one-sided than Andre 3000. Big Boi focused more on dominating the rap game with a strikingly smooth and original flow, all while incorporating his tack-sharp wit. Andre, on the other hand, covered a lot of the musical bases and focused more on fusing genres by incorporating elements of jazz, funk, and blues into the hip hop world. This contrast was exemplified on their 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, in which each album belonged to a different member; Speakerboxxx was Big Boi’s project and Andre’s was The Love Below. Although Speakerboxxx was very enjoyable, Andre’s efforts on The Love Below cast a shadow over Big Boi’s work, essentially leaving Speakerboxx in the dark.
After Andre’s 6 year absence, Big Boi has stepped up his game, continuing on with what he does best but also taking over Andre’s role of fusing additional elements of music into his own brand of hip hop. Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is Big Boi’s third solo album (if you inlcude Speakerboxxx, which you should) and further proves to show us that he can very well hold his own, and not just in the rap game. Big Boi manages to branch out musically, blending multiple genres together in a new way.

Arguably the most anticipated release of the summer releases with one of the most unfitting times – who releases an album called Cruel Summer with four days left in summer? Kanye does, a man with clearly no regard for the seasons, and an ever-increasing ego to boot. People often get driven wild by Kanye’s egomaniacal antics and proclamations about being the greatest thing since Jesus Christ or sliced bread, but what goes wrong with Kanye’s G.O.O.D. music compilation album, Cruel Summer, is Ye passing his ego onto his friends and believing if they hang with him, they must be great enough to stunt as well. What results is an album as inconsistent as the rappers Kanye has accrued.

WZRD (Kid Cudi & Dot da Genius)
Kid Cudi has been systematically trifling away any amount of goodwill that I may have originally had for him (meaning I am not a member of this fanpage). First, Cudi followed up his take-the-world-by-storm debut with a lackluster, albeit not terrible, sophomore album. Then, maybe through no fault of his own, Cudi’s character on HBO’s How to Make it in America became simply intolerable in the second season. I mean, come on, who wants to watch a respectable hip-hop artist portray a pot dealer for Manhattan’s elite who delivers said weed under the guise of a dog walker. He also transitioned from a smooth operator to a whimpering puddle of emotion who decides to date one of his best friend’s exes, which is pretty incestuous and sad. And now, Cudi has brought us WZRD to complete his transition to a Drake-like cautionary figure of the wussification of hip-hop.

To continue this positive outlook on what music we have to look forward to in the upcoming 2012 music season, we have decided to dedicate this week’s list to what bands/artists we are most looking forward to hearing from this year. Overall this was a fairly easy list to come up with for the three of us. In fact, had it not been for one pro-longed scurfuffle about a producer that is no longer even relevant, I’d say this was our easiest list to come by yet …
We at LxL have been too hurt by the false promises about the forthcoming Outkast album, that we feel like we need to keep it at arms length. If it were a guarantee release for this year, it would surely be our #1. However, we have been too let down by Andre before. So this time, we are excited, but not excited enough to ruin our year if it doesn’t happen.

I hate Drake. I don’t hate Drake because he is a marginally-talented-ass-clown who can’t write lyrics and has a shitty flow. I hate Drake because he is a marginally-talented-ass-clown who can’t write lyrics, has a shitty flow AND consistently pollutes some of the better beats and potential guest spots in the game merely by his presence. Drake is the President’s Day of Holidays. Drake is the Kia Sedan of automobiles. Drake is the prescription painkillers of illicit narcotics use. In almost all situations, Drake is the milquetoast cousin of what is good and right with the world. He flows like rancid syrup, and sings like he wants to be the soundtrack for a middle-schooler’s first handy (just like the Degrassi-alumni that he will always be). As a further note, Drake refers to himself as Drizzy occasionally. Spoiler alert: This goes over about as poorly as you think it would.

There has been this absurd narrative floating around, basically lauding Wale for resurrecting from the dead to release a second studio album. It’s not like the guy completely shat the bed on his debut or anything, it was just an utter commercial failure. In essence, this narrative is propagating the theory that the only hip-hop albums of any value are those with mass commercial appeal.
