My fall has been filled listening to two seemingly very different types of music: electronic music and soulful R&B. While on the surface this seems very much like a war between human and machine, the two find themselves in each others’ worlds quite often. So this is a mix of body (danceable electronic music) and soul (soul and R&B), and some that is both body and soul. While this has nothing in common with what I usually listen to in the fall, this is inevitably where I find myself, even though I am one of the least soulful and rhythmic people you will ever meet. This time of year, everyone (including us at LxL) are terribly obsessed with creating “end of the year lists”. Not only is it a fun topic of conversation and heated debate, but I also think it is appropriate because it is a good way to categorize eras of music. However, part of me always has a problem with the rush of the “end of year lists”. With the amount of music that comes our way in a year these days, it is hard not to miss a few things here and there. This is why last year I posted a LxListening reflecting on the songs of the year prior. For this year I am going to stick with the concept, but switch to albums. These are all albums that are now staples of mine. They have made my “go to” list of albums that will forever be tagged in my library as favorites, yet last year at this time, I’d hardly even listened to them (or in some cases, had not listened to them at all). The fact that this album was not even on my radar last year is almost depressing to me. Since really discovering The Money Store this past spring, it has been a staple for me in many moods and atmospheres … especially ones that involve extreme thrashing of any kind. Last year, EMA, Cults, Yuck, and A$AP Rocky headlined our list of best new artists. For the most part, the break out artists of 2011 toured to support their 2011 material in 2012, hitting the festival circuit particularly hard. And by the stipulations we determined this year, a couple of the artists wouldn’t have even been eligible (The Weeknd & A$AP). For this year’s list we explicitly only allowed artists who released their first proper studio album within the calendar year, unfortunately disqualifying artists such as Grimes, Ab-soul, and Schoolboy Q. In addition, previous mixtapes do not prohibit an artists eligibility, allowing Frank Ocean and Meek Mill to be eligible despite extensive previous exposure. These guidelines were not decided on lightly and may be changed for future lists, but we wanted to define this category as narrowly as possible.
Its debatable whether this year’s crop is as strong, but there have been plenty of new artists to break onto the scene. For this week’s Lxlistening, I wanted to highlight several tracks that have come out this year whose album we failed to review. Even though each album was noteworthy enough for me to go, “Hey guys, I’m gonna review this”, for some reason reviewing another album (or life in general) got in the way. Good or bad (mostly good), I hoped this week to give you a some brief feelings on the album as well as the chosen track. And yes, surprise surprise, my focus is mostly on strong female singers this week. But hey, even the only man on the list is attracted to dudes, so I have some semblance of a theme. Here we go.
