The Marshall Mathers LP2
Since I am the first one weighing in on Eminem’s MMLP2 I’m going to have to do some preemptive work to dispel the strong feelings against the album I’m sure Wes (and to a lesser extent Todd) are going to have against it. Wes doesn’t like Eminem for who he is. Eminem is unapologetically crass, emotionally raw to a terrifying degree, and cares much more about getting as many thoughts onto a record in word form than flashy production techniques. MMLP2 sticks to these tenets, and much like his previous record, Recovery, this all comes across with varying levels of success.

Music awards and ceremonies these days have become nothing short of a joke. Grammy’s: worthless garbage. MTV VMA’s: maybe if this was still the 90’s. American Music Awards: is that really even still a thing? In my opinion, if we consumers really need our music taste validated by some worthless award ceremony it should at least be one that eliminates all political or monetary persuasion, and is not restricted to the grip of big label entertainment. Enter the first YouTube Music Video Awards. Sound gimmicky? It more than likely will be. The performance lineup already looks stupidly similar to a Grammy’s bill. The artists so far include Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Arcade Fire, who judging by their horrific SNL performance last saturday, will likely be the worst of the three always over-hyped acts. So what edge DOES the YouTube Music Video Awards actually have that might make it worth watching? Let’s explore:

In honor of starting our second year as a full-functioning blog, we decided to make a top ten list of the best sophomore albums, in hopes of a sign of things to come for us. We already tackled sophomore slumps, and hope to avoid the same fate of the likes of Puff Daddy, Hot Hot Heat, and Weezer (Pinkerton…YUCK!). Hopefully you enjoy the next year of reading our little slice of internets as much as we enjoy these next ten albums. One quick note; although we titled the list “sophomore surges”, we simply looked at the best sophomore albums more than the “surge”. In a few cases the second album may not even be as good as the first, but is still great in its own right. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded
I think most people would agree that while Pink Friday was a supreme disappointment, bordering on unmitigated disaster. Featuring a wide array of terrible samples and unnecessary guest spots, Nicki’s debut was bland by her frenetic standards. Not only was Pink Friday bland, it also revealed her greatest flaw as an artist: self-awareness. I believe this flaw is why Nicki has shined more on tracks with other established artists than on tracks where she is the focal point (Kanye’s “Monster”, Lil’ Wayne’s “What’s Wrong With Them”, Young Money’s “F*** da Bullsh**”). And in fact the one track from Pink Friday that spoke to her potential was “Roman’s Revenge”, which had the creative imprint of Eminem all over it.

The amount of venom spit by Todd and Wes toward Dr. Dre’s late-millennium masterwork The Chronic 2001 had me all kinds of worked up last week. In fact, there was a lot of hate aimed towards Dre that was simply baffling to me. Despite the wide-ranging barbs directed at Dr. Dre, I would like to limit the scope of this post to The Chronic 2001, the main reason being that I think this album is the true culmination of all of Dre’s talents and far superior to The Chronic (1992 edition). So instead of writing ten thousand words, and including arguments about how the careers of Ice Cube, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, etc. essentially sprouted from Dre’s fertile loins, I will try to stay on point. Not that there would be any appreciation by Todd or Wes of Ice Cube. Cube didn’t get killed by firearm like Biggy or Tupac, so white kids in the 90’s didn’t pay attention to him (note: blows Tupac out of the water). But, I digress. I’m also going to try to stay away from arguments about why Dr. Dre is still musically relevant. I think the 2010 killer single, “I Need A Doctor”, speaks for itself.
So what I’m going to do is start addressing particular comments, starting with the most fair, and advancing to the most absurd, trying to limit my comments as much as possible to The Chronic 2001 and ripping on Todd and Wes.

Six weeks into LxL, things are still changing and adapting. Our little website is going through puberty if you will. Growing hair in strange places, and waking up with a wet spot in its shortpants. Today, we would like to offer up the first installment of LxListening, where one of us will basically provide a quick snapshot of what we are currently listening to. This is really just an opportunity for us to talk half-assedly about a bunch of things, instead of focus on one thing like grown-ups. Also, while things may change a little bit with this section, we will probably try to have 4 somewhat current picks (within the past year or so), and 1 older pick(several years old at least).
