I Can Be Your Hero, Baby: The 10 Best Music Superheroes

Editor’s Note: This list originally published in 2013, but with the new Avengers movie releasing tomorrow, it seemed like a great time to revisit the list.

In a concerted effort to make it seem we do not take ourselves too seriously, perhaps out of a fear of taking ourselves too seriously sometimes, we like to mix up our more scholarly lists with those that make us out to be a handful of nerdy jackasses.  This is one of those lists.  There has been a lot of hysteria surrounding superhero movies this summer.  I mean, damn, a Batman, Spiderman, and Avengers movies all in the same summer.  We are all extremely partial to Batman, especially those of the Nolan/Burton persuasion, and decided to save this dopey collection for around the time The Dark Knight Rises was released.  As comic-book/superhero movie fans,  we thought we could fantasize a little bit about which musicians would make the best superheroes, and speculate a little bit about their key attributes.  For awhile there, we considered doing a joint heroes/villains list, but ultimately decided to make two separate lists, with the heroes list today, and the villains list coming at you next Thursday.  Enjoy.

British singer/songwriter Archy Marshall aka King Krule may look like Tintin, but he has real soul and anguish in his music, and the voice of a much more lived man. The 19-year-old Londoner started his career at 15 making music under the name Zoo Kid, before changing over to his current moniker, King Krule, which he borrowed from the 1958 Elvis musical King Creole (contrary to the long-held belief that his name was inspired by the Donkey Kong villain King K. Rool). While the carrot-topped teenager has released music for four years, this fall marked the release of his long-awaited full-length debut, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, an album that shows an artist with sophistication and confidence well beyond his years.

Top Ten Thursday: I Can Be Your Hero, Baby

Lana Del Rey – Born to Die Review

From the very get-go, people questioned Lana’s legitimacy. She seemed like a great catch at first, but she was only a YouTube sensation without a full album. Her voice is deep and dark, and has this classic feel to it that catches your attention instantly. Meanwhile, the music backing her is almost more intriguing than her voice. Hip/hop beats, beautiful baroque orchestration, and sadcore synth stylings all fused together. Because she seems so original, and seems to have a stunning voice paired with such dynamic music production, it catches people off guard, and they gravitate towards it instantly. On the surface this seems great, and in some ways, it really is. However, if you’re digging for substance you may come up a little empty handed. Nonetheless, the album hit it big on the charts, topping at #2 in the US, and selling about as well across the rest of the globe which garnered her overrated reviews by the “indie” critics and famously positive reviews by the “label” critics. Playing out exactly as expected if you break this down.
