Tame Impala Review Royale: Currents

Tame Impala

Currents

tame-impala-currents-details-release-date-tracklist

For having never touched a drug in my life (alcohol and prescriptions excluded), I’ve always been surprisingly in love with psychedelic rock. Maybe it’s its ability to transport you to another place, or just being heavily exposed to “Paperback Writer” as a young lad. Either way, nobody scratches my psychedelic itch quite like Tame Impala, Australia’s finest band.

I Can Be Your Hero, Baby: The 10 Best Music Superheroes

LxL_TopTenThursdays_900x300

Editor’s Note: This list originally published in 2013, but with the new Avengers movie releasing tomorrow, it seemed like a great time to revisit the list.

In a concerted effort to make it seem we do not take ourselves too seriously, perhaps out of a fear of taking ourselves too seriously sometimes, we like to mix up our more scholarly lists with those that make us out to be a handful of nerdy jackasses.  This is one of those lists.  There has been a lot of hysteria surrounding superhero movies this summer.  I mean, damn, a Batman, Spiderman, and Avengers movies all in the same summer.  We are all extremely partial to Batman, especially those of the Nolan/Burton persuasion, and decided to save this dopey collection for around the time The Dark Knight Rises was released.  As comic-book/superhero movie fans,  we thought we could fantasize a little bit about which musicians would make the best superheroes, and speculate a little bit about their key attributes.  For awhile there, we considered doing a joint heroes/villains list, but ultimately decided to make two separate lists, with the heroes list today, and the villains list coming at you next Thursday.  Enjoy.

The 10 Best Band Names

LxL_TopTenThursdays_02_900x300band name

Editor’s note: It’s a slow week in music, so we figured we would revisit one of our favorite lists we have done, our very favorite band names.

Band names are a highly subjective topic for a top ten list.  Some people are more partial to goofy names (Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. anybody).  Some people dig simplicity (Cream).  And some people even have a penchant for alliteration (Modest Mouse).  We try to give every type of name its due on our list, but alas, a list of ten is far too short to honor all of the creative, funny, and bold names the creative geniuses throughout time have come up with.  Enjoy our list for what it is, and we’d love to hear your favorites in the comments.  Godspeed.

Todd Terje Review: It’s Album Time

Todd Terje

It’s Album Time

Todd Terje It's Album Time Review

In the streaming/music overload age, it feels rare to hear something that sounds truly fresh and exciting. Enter Norwegian electronic whiz Todd Terje. After a decade’s worth of singles, remixes, and DJ sets, Terje has decided it’s album time with his first album…It’s Album Time. Like its cheeky title, It’s Album Time is delightfully playful and a fun spring find.

The 10 Best Pharrell Tracks

LxL_TopTenThursdays_900x300Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh arrive at the 56th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles
I’m not sure there are more than five artists with whom you can make a better party playlist with than Pharrell Williams.  I’m talking 30-40 songs that will guarantee a good time for an energetic party.  Artists that come to mind are Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Kanye, Jay-Z and maybe a few others could be in the running, but even then the catalog of Pharrell may take the cake.

Pharrell has obviously had a huge year, with three smash hits in “Get Lucky”, “Happy”, and “Blurred Lines”.  What’s amazing is that only one of those tracks was able to crack our top ten list.  Pharrell is unique in many different ways, but what may make him the most unique is his uncanny ability to add that something extra that makes a song a hit.  Whether it is on the production side or in front of a microphone, Pharrell makes everything he touches a little bit better.  Enjoy the list, and have fun appreciating Pharrell with us.

10. “She Wants to Move” – N.E.R.D.

I’m not even going to address this song directly (it is great), but instead use this opportunity to let everyone know how annoying it is to correct someone when they call N.E.R.D. “nerd”.  It is also annoying to be the perpetrator of this mistake, but let’s all just leave it alone.

The Real Problem with the Grammys

2014 Grammy Award Recap

Last year I tried constructive criticism with the Grammys, hoping to fix its issues but also applauding what it
got right. I couldn’t possible take on such a task again, as I realized the problem runs so much deeper.

Best 20 Albums of 2013

greatest, favorite, best, albums of 2013

As Austin noted in our introduction to our favorite songs of 2013 list yesterday, it is much more difficult to list a years worth of favorites than one might think. 2013 was quite an interesting year in music. Many big names (or at least big expectations) left a disappointing taste in fans’ mouths (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, The Strokes, Jay-Z, etc.). This left the door wide open for smaller, and sometimes even unheard artists to really pave the way to a brighter future, and in some cases, all-out overnight stardom (Lorde, Savages, CHVRCHES, etc). This also left a lot of room for controversy. Who is worth the listen, and who is just going through the motions while filling our ear buds with noise? Well the controversy was not absent in making this list. With all three of us at LxL listing out our top 20 albums separately and then combining them into a normalized list, there was bound to be some peoples favorites left off. Mean things were said, blood was spilled, and opinions hotly thwarted. Nonetheless, the list must go on. Here is what we considered to be our favorite albums of 2013:

20. AlunaGeorge – Body Music

Last year, Alunageorge’s “Your Drums, Your Love” ranked in at #20 on our favorite songs of 2012. This year, the soulful pop R&B duo returned with a full LP to support the single, as well as a grip of other ripe-for-the-shaggin’ type of tunes. The duo now garnered another #20 slot, but this time on our albums list with Body Music.
