Ahhh…the spring. The time for birds chirping, flowers blooming, and of course, the start of a new music festival season. Last year at this time of year, we gave you our favorite spring albums, and many of the songs on this list, belong on entries for that list. Oh by the way, this week, we are bringing you the best songs for spring, the songs that help break us from our winter hibernation, throw open the curtains, and spring out into the world (pun intended). So join us as we clean out the old song garage and give you our ten favorite spring songs.

Editor’s Note: This is a repost from a list made in 2013. Enjoy!

LxListening: I Don’t Like It Unless It’s Brand New

album cover, new, bitter rivals, static, pure heroine, Lorde, Cults, Sleight Bells, Yuck, Danny Brown

The irony in the title of course is that the song “Brand New” by Rhymefest ft. Kanye West is now almost five years old. Nonetheless, here are some of my favorite actual new tracks for your weekend that have all been getting some heavy play time in my headphones lately:

Sleigh Bells – “You Don’t Get Me Twice”

Weak List Wednesday: This Week’s Five Best Tracks

new music, Big Sean, NIN, Trent, MIA, Matthew e white, cults
Bam! Just like that, artists began dropping tracks from the sky upon us all this past week. With the slight dry spell we have hit here in the late summer, it is nice and refreshing to have a breath of new music scattered upon us. It also is a pleasant reminder of some albums we have to look forward to this fall. So I decided to take advantage of these new single track releases by throwing out this list. There were in fact quite a few other songs dropped this past week as well, so you should dive into those as well, but these were my favorites. This was an impromptu list that I just constructed myself, so if something on the list does not sit well I am held solely responsible, and no blame should be put on the rest of the LxL team. Enjoy:

5. Nine Inch Nails – “Everything”

The most shocking song I’ve heard from NIN in … probably ever. Not due to any shocking lyrics or grossly aggressive industrial beats, but because of how poppy it is. That is right, welcome the poppiest, most new wave influenced song to ever exist in the Nine Inch Nails catalogue. I have to say I love it. The sound fits Reznor well, and although it may take a bit of getting used to from NIN, it’s a new trick for an old dog, and I love it.

Heavy Deeds Review: Light Lunch EP

Heavy Deeds

Light Lunch EP

light lunch

We get quite a few emails from bands and promoters of bands informing us of lower-profile releases.  Sometimes these emails are just to inform, but often they are solicitations of sorts to see if we will review an album or EP.  Often, we just ignore them, but every once in awhile, one of us will go through the stack and see if there is anything worthwhile to write about, or even just add to our iTunes library.  So, when I opened the email to check out Minneapolis-based coast-rock band Heavy Deeds, my mind was open, but expectations were not soaring.  I am happy to report, Heavy Deeds debut EP Light Lunch(officially released today) has been in heavy rotation on my iPod for about a week.

Top 20 Thursday: 2011 Albums That Will Live In Infamy

Because we at Little by Listen enjoy letting you know what the best of the best is, we have opted to force upon you our Top 20 albums of 2011.  Constructing this list was much simpler than the top 20 songs, and thankfully didn’t end with me burning down Wes’ house or digging up Todd’s childhood pet and leaving it for him to find in his bed.  In fact making this list was a little too easy, possibly because Todd had a cold nose while we were making it, and probably just wanted to get the process over with.  Or maybe because Wes needed to tend to his beehives to collect some holiday honey (honey is coincidentally the name of Todd’s childhood pet btw).  Please enjoy the list we have so meticulously crafted, and feel free to throw your entries in the comments so we can immediately dismiss you as philistines with no taste.
