This has been an odd year in music by all accounts. There have been nearly no big-time rap albums (except arguably Future’s Honest), it’s been a down year for electronic music (just months after I declared 2013 the year dance music became king), and rock music has made an unexpected comeback (with three albums on our list being unabashed guitar rock records). The albums on our list are also decidedly slower, and more relaxed, as I would say half the albums on this list are very melancholy albums (especially our top two). Without further ado, our top ten so far in this odd year of music. Continue reading “The 10 Best Albums of 2014 So Far”
Recently there has just been a slew of “unreleased music” that has been dropped onto the inter-webs. A lot of it is clearly intentional, I suppose to probably get the public interested and eager for the artist’s new material that is about to drop. But whether it is because of song leakage (Antlers), announcement videos (Cat Power), or the artists just straight-up releasing a single/video months before the new album drops (M.I.A/Dirty Projectors), all of the below tracks are out and available for a listen. If these tracks are any implication for the rest of their respective albums, we are in for a real treat in late 2012. So in honor of our “Best of the Year … So Far” lists, here is a little taste of what I have been listening too lately, and what we have to look forward to for the remainder of the year. I am unable to craft some clever or ironic theme for LxListening this week, so you get the leavings of some of my favorite tracks of 2011 that never got any press on our site. Give em’ a listen; you might like it. Continue reading “LxListening: This & That”
Because we at Little by Listen enjoy letting you know what the best of the best is, we have opted to force upon you our Top 20 albums of 2011. Constructing this list was much simpler than the top 20 songs, and thankfully didn’t end with me burning down Wes’ house or digging up Todd’s childhood pet and leaving it for him to find in his bed. In fact making this list was a little too easy, possibly because Todd had a cold nose while we were making it, and probably just wanted to get the process over with. Or maybe because Wes needed to tend to his beehives to collect some holiday honey (honey is coincidentally the name of Todd’s childhood pet btw). Please enjoy the list we have so meticulously crafted, and feel free to throw your entries in the comments so we can immediately dismiss you as philistines with no taste.
For some reason I have been stuck in this 80’s music vibe lately. It is hard not to be, because it has been heavily trending in music right now, and seems to be popping up everywhere. It probably also has to do with the fact that I recently saw the movie Drive, which was extremely awesome, and had this soundtrack that was equally as awesome, and super 80’s. Every track below, is a track that I tend to sing the very loud and get real weird with while in the my car by myself lately. Some are also tracks that have just helped me think about the issues in my life that have been keeping me awake as of recent. They can serve purposes of many layers, but most of all, they are brilliant songs that I have been jamming the hell out of at every opportunity the past few weeks.
With the great disappointment of Mylo Xyloto (Coldplays new concept album that dropped earlier this week) still being fresh in our heads, we at LxL wanted to remind the world that there are indeed good concept albums out there. Apologies to Austin, who got particularly screwed in this weeks voting, but nonetheless, here is what we came up with: Continue reading “Top Ten Thursday: Conception”
