If you haven’t deduced by the title, I have been listening to a lot of shi**y sounding garage rock lately. Which incidentally, sounds far from shi**y, but rather incredibly pleasant to my ears. It began when the Screaming Females performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. I keep going back to them, and it spun me right back into my frequent obsession with dirty, overly distorted, garage-rock-grunge-punk. The 5 songs I am going to list are actually fairly fun, poppy, upbeat songs for each artist. So let loose and enjoy … Continue reading “LxListening: As Lo As Fi Can Go”
Now that 2012 is in full force, it’s time to put a rest to all our 2011 themes and focus on the future. A lot of bands are lining up for their sophomore efforts this year, some new acts are already getting high praises before their debut has even launched, and some old favorites will hopefully be reappearing for the first time in years to show us what they still got. In any case, and in lieu of being sick and tired of 2011 music for the moment, I revisited the last efforts of some bands recently, that I am looking forward to hearing more of in the upcoming new year. So here is my what I’ve been listening to as of late, in an attempt to arouse my appetite for these music acts once again. Hopefully it does the same for you. Well December is now upon us, which means the years end is rapidly approaching. Everyone is just chomping at the bit to be the first ones to post their “best of the year lists” whether it be movies, books, songs, video games, or albums. To me, this is rather dumb. Not the process of picking a list of your favorite anything, I love that. But rather the rush to do so. Sure December isn’t always the most prime month for an album drop, but this year alone, The Roots, and The Black Keys have albums dropping in December. Both of which could easily make it on my “best of the year list” if they play their cards right. The other thing that bothers me about this approach, is the fact that a year, or months, or even weeks after the fact, that list could potentially hold half it’s value to you. People get overhyped about albums, or ruined by the timing of an album, or maybe the album just hits that at the perfect time, or maybe the album was overplayed by a dumb friend to the dumb point where you wanted to repeatedly smash his dumb ipod into his dumb face until he dumb cried like a little girl.
For some reason I have been stuck in this 80’s music vibe lately. It is hard not to be, because it has been heavily trending in music right now, and seems to be popping up everywhere. It probably also has to do with the fact that I recently saw the movie Drive, which was extremely awesome, and had this soundtrack that was equally as awesome, and super 80’s. Every track below, is a track that I tend to sing the very loud and get real weird with while in the my car by myself lately. Some are also tracks that have just helped me think about the issues in my life that have been keeping me awake as of recent. They can serve purposes of many layers, but most of all, they are brilliant songs that I have been jamming the hell out of at every opportunity the past few weeks.
