LxListening: Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends music playlist

Not exactly sure what’s caused it, but my music listening as of late has been all over the board. From Neil Young’s On The Beach to Q-Tip’s solo work to indie groups like Islands and School of Seven Bells, I’m all over the map. I lack serious direction at the moment. Thus, this playlist reflects my scatterbrain listening at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less worthwhile. This list has some of the best nuggets I have shared to date.

Charles Bradley- “No Time For Dreaming”

Talk being late to the party. 63 year old Charles Bradley released his debut album last year in No Time For Dreaming which sounds straight out of the 70’s. You could easily trick someone to do so, and if he was around back then, he probably would have become a soul great. But just because it was released four decades late doesn’t make it bad, as ”No Time For Dreaming” is just flat out phenomenal soul music.

Desire- “Under Your Spell”

Nothing makes me want to throw on a white Scorpion jacket, drive fast, and make bloody carnage more than this song. This highlight from the Drive Soundtrack perfectly captures the 80’s pastiche of the great action film.

Another song I discovered through another medium (being Friday Night Lights), this is maybe my favorite thing I have heard Mark Lanegan do, and the song is just gut-wrenchingly soulful and simply haunting.

Damien Jurado-“Life Away From The Garden”

What’s this guy got to do to earn some credit? Seattle singer/songwriter has made a career out of making extremely solid solo records (especially as of late), and this is my favorite song off of his latest, Maraqopa. The video features backup vocals from another underrated indie folk artist in the Head and the Heart.

Bob Dylan and The Band- “Odds and Ends”

I figured this list was a good excuse for me to mention Basement Tapes, which brings not one but two scoops in legendary rock & roll greatness with both Bob Dylan and the Band. Nothing like sloppy, freewheeling Rock ‘n’ Roll to lift your spirits.

Well there’s the list. If you wish to hear more random gems, check out my 15 song Spotify Playlist.

  1. Nice playlist. Quite A few I hadn’t heard before, like Damien Jurado, Andrew Bird and Desire (very eighties that one). Will check their albums out.
